Make Your Thanksgiving Less Complicated, More Meaningful

It’s that special time of year when we all take time to reflect on the many people and things that we are thankful for.  I am thankful for so many things, and YOU are one of them!

Thanks for dropping by from time to time and letting me share thoughts and ideas with you this year!

Here are a few ideas for making your Thanksgiving holiday MORE Meaningful and Less Complicated.

1.  Create a Blessing Jar – Select a treasured family container and ask everyone to write down on a slip of paper something they are thankful for and drop it into the Blessing Jar. My family has done this with my Nana’s cookie jar and my Grandma’s collander.  Ask someone to pull the slips from the jar, one by one, and read them aloud.  (Kids love to do this.) Then let everyone guess who wrote each message.  See my video about the Blessing Jar here.

My great-niece read each blessing out loud.

2.  Spend Time Outdoors. Don’t stay cooped up in the house cooking and cleaning ALL day.  Make a point to breathe in some fresh air and notice the changing colors.  Take a short walk if you can.

3.  Dismiss the thought that you should make “just one more dish” to have the perfect dinner.  It’s OK to do less this year – or to take short cuts and buy something already prepared.  Remember – Thanksgiving is more about being together with loves ones, and less about whether or not the mac and cheese was made from scratch.

4.  Plan an alternate activity to Black Friday shopping.  If you enjoy this annual shopping day – by all means, enjoy it!  But you could choose to do one of these ideas instead:

  • Host a board game marathon or family game night.
  • Offer to rake leaves or do yard work for an elderly family member or neighbor.
  • Pack a few leftover snacks and go on a family hike.
