The Magic of Margin

Ever feel like your life is one long to-do list with barely enough time to breathe?

We live in a world that celebrates hustle – Every hour is booked. Every moment is optimized.

But what if the REAL magic — the clarity, the calm, the unexpected joy — was hiding in the one thing we tend to avoid?

Empty space.

Let’s talk about Margin — The white space in your day — and why protecting it might just save your sanity.

What Is Margin?

  • Margin is the white space in your life.
  • It’s the buffer between what you can do and what you should do.
  • It can be the difference between “busy” and “burned out.”

Think of it like the white space around text in a book.

Without it, the story feels suffocating — words crammed edge to edge. It’s overwhelming, right? Our lives can feel that way, too: overflowing with tasks, meetings, obligations…

Your Margin is that white space – it invites breathing room.

It’s the “nothing” between all your “somethings.”

It’s that glorious chunk of time when you’re not working at your job, or folding laundry, or searching for the right box of cereal at the grocery store!

Why We Need Margin

Think of Margin as life’s built-in buffer zone—where you get to regroup, reset, maybe even remember what your own thoughts sound like.

Margin allows for rest and creativity. Without it, everything becomes urgent.

But when you build in Margin — 10 extra minutes here, an empty hour there, an unscheduled evening — you create space for life to happen.

It gives you the freedom to be present, not just productive.

With Margin – You can let life surprise you — in a good way. And honestly, some of the best moments happen in the in-between: the unplanned walk, the spontaneous chat, the deep thought that shows up when you’re doing absolutely nothing.

How To Create Margin

So how do you actually add Margin to your day when you already feel like you’re running on empty?

It’s not about a full life overhaul. It’s about building in small pockets of space — on purpose.

Watch my video – or keep reading for ways to create Margin in your life.

Here are a few ideas for you:

1. Wake up just 15 minutes earlier.

Not to hustle. Not to be productive. Just to be.

No emails. No notifications. Just stillness. Sometimes a quiet cup of coffee is the best kind of therapy.

2. Schedule less than you can handle.

Just because you can do five things in a day doesn’t mean you should.

Leave room for life’s surprises.

3. Build in transition time.

Don’t jump straight from one task to the next. Give yourself room to decompress, reset, and breathe… literally!

Not every meeting or event ends on time. Not every day runs smoothly. Plan like the unexpected is coming. Because… it is!

4. Embrace silence.

You don’t need to fill every quiet moment with noise.

You don’t need to fill every gap with a screen, a scroll, or a side hustle.

Some of the best ideas come when you’re just… quiet.

5. Keep one night a week plan-free.

Think of it as your weekly reset.

No dinner plans, no errands, no guilt.

6.  Drive without distractions.

Try not listening to anything. No podcast. No news. Just… drive.

Allow your brain coast a little.

7. Say no without guilt.

Margin requires boundaries. Every “yes” to someone else is a potential “no” to your peace.

Protecting your time isn’t selfish. It’s smart.

8. Replace “scroll time” with “stare-at-the-ceiling time.”

Lie down and let your brain wander. Be unproductive – on purpose.

I was listening to an interview with simplicity author Courtney Carver recently. She said that she “loves boring!”  She explains that’s where the ideas lie … when your nervous system is rested. Courtney believes “There is beauty in boredom.”

Some people might think using the same coffee mug over and over is boring – but she loves grabbing her favorite cup every day. Sometimes boredom will spark her interest in baking something or making something.

So create marginal time to be bored. And you know what? Sometimes that’s when your brain throws a surprise party with genius ideas. Try it and see!.

9. Protect your margin – your white space –  like it’s sacred.

Because IT IS.

Don’t feel guilty for resting. Doing nothing is doing something. It’s called recovery.  Athletes do it. Here’s your chance to be like Serena Williams or Michael Jordan.

Don’t wait until you’re burned out to rest. Make margin a habit, not a last resort.

These little shifts… they make room for your mind to breathe. They turn survival mode into something slower… softer… more human.

Margin isn’t just about having time — it’s about having space to FEEL time.

So give yourself the Gift of Margin!

  • It’s not wasted time. It’s the space where your soul catches up with your schedule.
  • It’s where creativity returns, emotions are processed and relationships are nurtured.
  • When you protect your margin, you protect your peace. You reclaim your time — not just to do more — but to be more!

So today, I challenge you: Look at your schedule. Find the white space and protect it like it’s the last cookie on the plate!

Because the Margin isn’t empty. It’s full of life!
