We’ve all been there. That feeling of constantly being behind, of always trying to catch up. To-do lists seem to grow longer, and the pressure to achieve more intensifies. We’re caught in a relentless cycle, and it can feel exhausting.
As author Courtney Carver eloquently put it: “If catching up worked, then you’d be caught up right now.” And yet, we often find ourselves perpetually chasing this elusive “caught up” state.
Why We’re Always Chasing Our Tails
Several factors contribute to this feeling of constant catch-up:
- Perfectionism: The relentless pursuit of flawlessness leaves us constantly striving for an unattainable ideal.
- Lack of Planning: Without a clear plan, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and directionless.
- Overcommitting: Saying “yes” to everything leaves us stretched too thin and unable to focus on what truly matters.
- Neglecting Self-Care: Burning the candle at both ends leads to burnout and hinders our ability to function effectively.
- Multitasking: Trying to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously can actually decrease productivity and increase stress.
- Social Comparison: Constantly comparing ourselves to others can create feelings of inadequacy and the urge to keep up.
- Fear of Missing Out (FOMO): The constant pressure to be “in the know” can lead to a constant state of anxiety and a fear of missing out on opportunities.
Breaking Free from the Cycle
Here are a few suggestions that can help us break free from this constant catch-up game cycle:
- Embracing Imperfection:
- Acknowledge that perfection is unattainable.
- Focus on progress, not perfection. Celebrate small wins and acknowledge your efforts.
- Setting Realistic Expectations:
- Create achievable to-do lists.
- Break down large tasks into smaller, manageable steps.

- Overcoming FOMO:
- Practice the “joy of missing out” by disconnecting from constant social media updates.
Finding Peace in the Present Moment
Ultimately, the goal is to find peace in the present moment. When we’re constantly chasing the next thing, we miss out on the beauty and joy of the present. By cultivating mindfulness and prioritizing self-care, we can break free from the constant cycle of catch-up and live a more fulfilling life.
